The Maitland region has an excellent standard of health services with a number of facilities including the Maitland Hospital, Maitland Private Hospital, and the Lower Hunter Community Health Care Centre. Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital and Mater Hospital also have an excellent reputation; John Hunter is home to NSW’s only regional children’s hospital and also houses a neonatal intensive care unit.

Emergency care is provided 24 hours a day at Maitland, John Hunter and the Mater hospitals, with the Hunter serviced by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. Throughout the region there is also a large number of aged care facilities, psychiatric services, community health centres and indigenous health centres.
